5 Steps to Live with...

Many people with diabetes experience negative emotions (i.e. stress, depression, frustration, loneliness, etc.) that ultimately impact diabetes self-care. This article will offer some insight ways to handle these emotions if you have diabetes.

Step 1 - PUT DIABETES INTO PERSPECTIVE - Most people with diabetes say that they are "living with diabetes". However, the reality is that diabetes is really living with them. Thinking about it this way means that it is not necessary to plan life around diabetes. Instead, management of diabetes is planned around one's life. This makes coping with diabetes easier

Step 2 - START AND MAINTAIN REGULAR DOCTOR VISITS. Diabetes is a chronic medical condition but being healthy is still possible!! Doctors, nurses, dieticians, certified diabetes educators are all a part of a comprehensive diabetes healthcare team. They all know a lot about diabetes and can help you in coping with your diabetes.

Step 3 - SHARE YOUR CHALLENGES WITH YOUR HEALTHCARE TEAM. The best way for the healthcare team to help is to know "HOW" they can help. The patient is the most reliable source of this information. Patients that share in this way increase the chance that they get the right care and advice.

Step 4 - REACH OUT TO OTHERS WITH DIABETES. Shared experience is powerful. Many people are trying to figure out how to cope with their diabetes. When incorporating diabetes management into daily life, other people with diabetes can be a strong source of support and encouragement.

Step 5 - DEVELOP AN "I CAN" ATTITUDE. One of the big differences between people that live healthy with diabetes and those who don't is a made up mind. Once people make up their minds, they are usually successful. Of course, there are setbacks and hurdles sometimes....but to successfully cope with diabetes, it is worth it to find a way to bounce back and move forward!
